I caught the midnight fragrance of cutting chai and rain

Stranded on a wet coastal promenade, a warm glass of tea showed me the real soul of Mumbai.

Mumbai, Maharashtra
The clock overhead struck two in the morning, and the dark sky above Marine Drive was pouring buckets. I sat under a tiny, dripping blue plastic sheet at a small street corner, my clothes completely soaked to the skin. The city around me was glowing with the yellow reflection of streetlights bouncing off wet asphalt. Everything felt heavy, cold, and beautifully overwhelming. Suddenly, a young boy with a wire basket handed me a small glass of piping hot cutting chai.

The sharp scent of crushed ginger and sweet cardamom instantly filled the damp air between us. I took a slow sip, feeling the intense heat spread through my frozen fingers. Around me, groups of friends were laughing loudly, completely ignoring the wild storm, while old couples walked slowly along the ocean wall. The massive waves crashed violently against the concrete rocks, throwing cold saltwater spray directly into our faces. In that small, quiet pocket of the night, the giant, intimidating city did not feel scary or distant anymore. I realized right then that Mumbai does not judge your loneliness; it simply wraps you up in its beautiful, midnight rhythm.
