Instead of panicking, I stopped moving and let my boots sink into the thick, squelching mud. I closed my eyes and simply let the mountain speak. The freezing spray hit my face in rhythmic waves, tasting of pure rain and mountain minerals. I could feel the deep, deep vibration of the hidden cascade rumbling right through the soles of my feet. Slowly, I walked toward the thunder. The mist parted for a single split second, revealing a massive, semicircular crescent of roaring white water crashing onto the dark boulders right in front of me. In that cold, terrifying flash of beauty, I realized that getting lost was the only way to truly find the mountain.
