The Gathering of the Five Holy Rivers

Local folklore deeply links the creation of Lingamala to the famous Panchganga Temple located in Old Mahabaleshwar. According to regional legend, five holy rivers—the Krishna, Koyna, Venna, Savitri, and Gayatri—all originate from the mouth of a stone cow (Go-mukh) inside the temple.

Lingamala Waterfall, Maharashtra

Local folklore deeply links the creation of Lingamala to the famous Panchganga Temple located in Old Mahabaleshwar. According to regional legend, five holy rivers—the Krishna, Koyna, Venna, Savitri, and Gayatri—all originate from the mouth of a stone cow (Go-mukh) inside the temple.

It is believed that the Venna River separated from its sister rivers to carve its own path across the high plateau. The river initially forms the famous Venna Lake, but as it flows further, it encounters a massive 600-foot volcanic cliff. The roaring plunge it takes over this cliff is what we see as Lingamala Waterfall. Locals look at the waterfall not just as a scenic spot, but as the spirited, rushing manifestation of Goddess Venna herself.
