Chasing the Hidden Giant of Lonavala

Deep Into the Dark Forest and Behind a 350-Foot Wall of Water

Kataldhar Waterfall, Maharashtra
Unlike most treks where you climb first, our journey to Kataldhar Waterfall began with a steep, knee-jarring descent. Leaving the main Rajmachi trail behind at a marker of wild mango trees, we plunged directly into the Ulhas Valley’s dense jungle canopy. The forest was so incredibly thick that daylight barely touched the muddy floor, and we found ourselves ducking under tangled vines, navigating slippery, root-twisted paths, and relying completely on ribbons tied to trees to keep from getting lost.

Just as my legs began to shake from the constant, steep downward scramble, a deafening, thunderous roar echoed through the trees. Breaking through the final thicket, we stepped into a massive horseshoe-shaped amphitheater of rock.

There it was—Kataldhar, a colossal 350-foot sheet of roaring white water smashing into the valley floor. The sheer force of the wind and mist blew back our hair before we even got close. We scrambled into the massive, eye-shaped cave hidden directly behind the cascading curtain of water, completely drenched and breathless. Looking out at the world through a literal wall of thundering rain, the exhausting climb back up ahead of us didn't matter at all. We had found the hidden heartbeat of the Sahyadris.
