The monsoon wind always guides me back to the thumb.

A rain-soaked climb up Karnala's ancient trails reveals a quiet world where history breathes beneath a canopy of mist.

Karnala Fort, Maharashtra
The smell of wet earth hits me the moment I step onto the trail. It is July, and the Western Ghats are alive. Around me, the Karnala Bird Sanctuary is a symphony of dripping leaves and the sharp, sudden calls of hidden hornbills.

My boots sink slightly into the dark mud. The climb is steady, a familiar rhythm that warms my damp skin despite the cool, relentless drizzle. Moss coats the ancient basalt rocks like velvet, softening the edges of a path that soldiers walked centuries ago. I pause to breathe, wiping rainwater from my eyes, and look upward.

Through a tear in the shifting fog, the basalt thumb of Karnala Fort appears. It cuts through the cloud cover, dark and imposing.
