I walked into a July cloud that smelled of wild thunder.

Stranded on a narrow ridge, a sudden mountain storm washed away my map and revealed a world of waterfalls.

Matheran, Maharashtra
The world turned completely white within a matter of seconds at Echo Point. I stood frozen on the slick red dirt trail as a massive, low-flying monsoon cloud rolled directly over the cliff edge, swallowing me whole. The rain did not just fall; it stung my cheeks like tiny needles, driven by a powerful, upward wind that threw water droplets back toward the sky. My map was instantly reduced to a soggy, useless clump of blue ink in my hand.

I couldn't see more than two steps ahead, but my ears were flooded with an incredible, deep symphony. All around me, the hidden mountain valleys had come alive with the thunderous roar of dozens of temporary waterfalls plunging into the Konkan plains below. The intense scent of wet basalt rock and fresh wild ferns filled my lungs with every deep breath. I walked slowly, guided only by the soft, squelching sound of my mud-soaked boots on the clay tracks. There were no phone signals, no train whistles, and no crowded viewpoints. In that raw, stormy isolation, I felt completely small, beautifully untethered, and entirely alive inside the mountain's wild embrace.
