Peering over the edge, a chilly draft hits my face, carrying the scent of ancient stone and deep water. The sheer scale of it makes my breath catch. Three centuries ago, workers chiseled this colossal chasm by hand just so soldiers could survive a siege. Nearby, a local farmer smiles as he tends his crops, completely at home alongside this terrifyingly beautiful drop.
As the evening sun dips low, painting the Kalaval creek below in hues of liquid gold, I look back at the gaping stone mouth. Kingdoms fell and cannons vanished, but the water down in the dark remains completely undisturbed.
