Stepping Off the Edge into the Roaring Vangani Void

A thrill-seeker overcomes fear, strapped to a single rope while descending the wet, vertical cliffs of Sahyadri’s wildest monsoon rush.

Bhagirath Waterfall, Maharashtra
The thunder of crashing water vibrated straight through my bones. Standing at the top of the 200-foot precipice of Bhagirath Waterfall, the cold mountain wind whipped mist across my face, blinding me for a split second. My fingers clutched the heavy nylon rope tightly, and my knuckles turned stark white. Below me lay a sheer drop of dark, slick volcanic basalt rock, entirely swallowed by a roaring column of foaming white water.

"Lean back, trust your harness, and start walking," the instructor shouted over the deafening noise.

Taking a deep breath, I stepped backward into mid-air. Instantly, the freezing torrent hit me full force, forcing my eyes shut as the heavy spray hammered my helmet. My boots struggled to find grip on the slick rock face as the water rushed wildly past my legs. Hanging between the stormy sky and the churning plunge pool below, the initial terror instantly dissolved into pure, raw adrenaline. Pushing off the cliff face, I let out a triumphant shout that was completely absorbed by the roar of the canyon—a wild, unforgettable moment of total freedom.
